The Legacy of the 2012 Olympic Games
Have you ever heard of a 41 billion pound benefactor?
Well, East Londoners have.
A Sparkling Sports Legacy
In the aftermath of the 2012 Olympic Games, a diamond-studded wake dazzled East Londoners to the tune of 28 billion pounds sterling, or 39.6 billion U.S. dollars, in local revenue.
Grant Thornton, a research firm, found the Games generated a sizable economic impact through tourism, converted athletes’ quarters, trade, and local investments. The redevelopment of London’s east boroughs was projected to secure 41 billion pounds in revenue by the year 2020.
Mixing sports strata
Nine years after the event, the 2012 Games benefit communities living around the Olympic Park in Stratford. The long-term gains birthed a new culture that benefits from health, social inclusion, increased volunteerism, education, jobs, housing, and increased participation in elite sports, especially for younger generations.
Today the facilities used by the Games still attract international tourism and local engagement. Elite athletes train alongside amateurs, who enjoy an occasional swim or workout beside Olympic medalists. 2012 Olympic Games
