On Civil Discourse

Father of Perpetual Peace, let us revisit the intent of civil discourse which prevailed among our Founding Fathers. Lead us, that we may preserve the inaugural principles of our nation. We acknowledge that we use harsh words and images, and witness the untoward effects they create. Let us not plead ignorance or claim self-righteousness in the face of adversity, but take responsibility for our lack of discretion, that society may take a lesson from it. For it is no secret that incendiary devices are designed to ignite inflammatory responses; let us recall the effect of fiery rhetoric on audiences who are on the fringes of society, who hasten to rob us of our golden citizens. Lead us away from those who would seek to divide us or cause disharmony in our midst. Bind us together in peace through principles of propriety and tolerance. The preservation of a great society demands a polite and civil discourse, valor and integrity in free speech, and dialogue for the common good, not sedition.
