Prayer to Instill Light in the Soul

Deliver me from the lures of this world, dear God, and

draw me into the cistern of Your celestial light. Burst

the scales of greed that enshroud my eyes, and clarify my

path with the light of generosity. Unlock the shackles of

pride that I have festooned upon myself and clothe me in

the rich, velvet robe of humility. Cleanse my heart of

envy this day and purify it with gladness for others.

Expose the folly of judgment in which I delight, that I

may observe its foolishness. Reveal to me the charm and

dignity of acceptance. Contain my lusts and appetites—

sate my soul with the sweet wine of living a fuller life.

Destroy the infusion of ill will and hatred that sometimes

plagues my heart; steep it in love and good will toward

men. Illuminate my soul, dear God, one day that I may dwell

in Your holy and perfect light.
